How to Create A Smokey Eye

Hey Guys! It seems like the classic smokey eye is one of the looks that most women struggle with most. It adds so much emphasis and sexiness to the eyes, but it’s easy for it to turn into a dark smudgy mess! So here’s a quick tutorial to show you how to create a simple smokey eye. You can use this same technique with virtually any color combination that your heart desires! Just remember, the key is to blend, blend, blend!

Smokey Eye Tutorial

1. Start by using a dark base. This will help the color to really pop, and to last all day long. Here I used MAC’s Constructivist Paint Pot and applied it with a stiff brush, but your finger would work just as well!

2. Apply shadow. This is going to set your base, and obviously be the main color of your look. I used MAC’s Bluebrown pigment, but you could use virtually any color! Browns tend to be the most common smokey eye color, but try to branch out and use purples, greens, golds, or even black if you’re feeling really bold! Just make sure to add color under your bottom lashes for a cohesive look.

3. BLEND, BLEND, BLEND! Take a medium toned brown and blend out your crease to blow out any harsh lines. This is what will make your look smokey. I used Cork from MAC with a 217 brush.

4. Darken up the outer corner. This will further deepen your look and make your eye look even more smokey and defined. I used that same 217 blending brush and Makeup Geek’s Corrupt shadow. Just a little bit of black shadow will make a world of difference!

5. Add liner. Take your favorite kohl liner and line your waterline and upper lash line. Here I used my personal favorite, Revlon ColorStay in Black.

6. Add mascara and top with lashes! Of course, the false lashes are always optional, but with darker looks it’s easy for your lashes to get lost in the shadow, so I like to add falsies for added drama. Don’t forget to coat those bottom lashes!

Thanks for stopping by! If you recreate a smokey eye using this technique, I’d love to see it! Tag me on Instagram or Twitter @xoxoKarBear. If there are any looks you’d like me to post a tutorial on, please comment and let me know! I hope you all enjoy your Monday and that you have a fabulous week!

Kat Von D Chrysalis Eyeshadow Palette Review

Kat Von D recently released two palettes inspired by the metamorphosis of the butterfly. There’s the Monarch Palette (warm tones) and the one that I picked up, the Chrysalis Palette (cool tones). I think the first thing I noticed was the gorgeous packaging. It features a cardboard palette with a magnetic closure. The butterfly on the outside is gorgeous and even has little skull details on the wings.

The shadows inside are just as gorgeous as the packaging. It features 12 cool-toned shadows (5 matte, 7 shimmers) and they all compliment each other very well. There is also three larger shadows that have already come in really handy for me since Lifelife and Lucid both resemble two MAC shadows that I use constantly (Vanilla and Yogurt). The pigmentation of these is wonderful (as you can see from the swatches below), and they are also very soft and buttery. Because they are so soft, they do tend to flake a bit when you pick up the color with a brush, but I’ve found that this same thing happens with most Kat Von D shadows. However, their quality is so good that it’s not something that would detour me from purchasing her palettes at all. In fact, I own four of them now, and haven’t been disappointed yet!

One thing I really like about this palette is that it offers enough matte and shimmer shadows to be able to do a full look. So often I find palettes that don’t have any matte colors to blend with, so I end up using shadows from other palettes. This palette offers 5 different matte shades, three of them being great colors to blend with.

KVD Swatches

All swatches are just one swipe of shadow on bare skin with no primer in natural light

The bottom line is, I really, really like this palette. Usually when I get a palette I will use it for a few days, then I will get bored of it and move on to something else until I rediscover it months later. That simply hasn’t been the case with this palette. I’ve used it non-stop since I purchased it, and I’ve gotten compliments every single day!

The Kat Von D Chrysalis palette can by purchased at Sephora or at Sephora’s website http://www.sephora.com/chrysalis-eyeshadow-palette-P385529?icid2=Kat_Von_D_WhatsNew_Carousel_P385529_image for $46.

My Favorite Foundations

image (39)

Without a doubt the question I get asked most is “What foundation do you use?” It’s such a hard question for me to answer because I don’t use just one and I can’t possibly pick a favorite! So here is a list of my top foundations. I’ve included some high end and some drugstore brands so you can find a good foundation no matter your budget!

image (55)

MAC Studio Fix Liquid

This foundation has been a favorite of mine for years now. It’s full coverage but doesn’t make you look cakey, if applied correctly. It gives a demi-matte finish and is suitable for all skin types. MAC has an excellent color range so chances are you’ll be able to find one that matches you perfectly. One word of caution though, I’ve heard people say that MAC foundations break them out. I’ve never had a problem with it and I have acne prone skin, but just know that if your skin doesn’t cooperate, MAC has a great return policy!

Studio Fix foundation is $26 and can be purchased at a MAC store, counter, or at maccosmetics.com

image (45)

L’Oreal True Match

This is hands down my most worn foundation. I cannot say enough great things about it. Not only is it affordable and available at the drugstore, but the color range is fantastic, and it lasts all day on me. It’s a medium coverage foundation but can be built up into full if you need more. If your on a budget and need a more affordable option, this foundation would be my #1 pick.

True Match can be found at drugstores and ranges from $6-$9 depending on location

image (49)

Urban Decay Naked Skin

This foundation is like any other that I’ve tried. It very runny when you squirt it out, which is usually a characteristic of more sheer foundations, but somehow that formula covers flawlessly! It truly lives up to it’s name because it feels very light on the skin, like you have a ‘naked’ face. The color range is pretty limited so if you’re very fair or very dark, you might not find a match for you.

Naked Skin is $39 and can be found at Ulta, Sephora, and urbandecay.com

image (53)

Revlon ColorStay

This is another great foundation from the drugstore. It’s medium coverage but can be built up to full. It gives a beautiful natural finish. There’s also two different formulations that accommodate all skin types from dry, to normal, to oily. They also have a really good color range.

ColorStay ranges from $6-$10 depending on location and can be found at drugstores

image (51)

Make Up For Ever HD

This foundation is amazing because it gives you a finish that looks just like skin. It has a medium coverage and can be built up. The foundation is very long lasting and is great for someone looking for beautiful coverage, but not wanting to look like they have a full face of foundation on. It is a bit pricey, which is the only downfall.

HD foundation is $42 and can be purchased at Sephora or the MUF website at makeupforever.com

Neutrogena Skin Clearing Foundation

I was rummaging through the isles of Target one day and stumbled upon this guy. I was instantly drawn in simply because it contains salicylic acid. For those of you that don’t know, salicylic acid is known to calm and treat acne. A foundation that treats and cures acne while you wear it? I’m in! It is full coverage and I can get about 9 hours of wear from it. Unfortunately, I don’t have acne any longer so I can’t really test the working power of the salicylic acid, but I can say that my skin does look more even after wearing it for a few days. It’s an excellent foundation and budget-friendly so you can’t go wrong!

Neutrogena Skin Clearing foundation  is $8-$12 depending on location and can be found a drugstores.

image (47)

Kat Von D Lock-It Tattoo foundation

If my skin is ever giving me a hard time and I really need a foundation to cover up everything, this is the one I reach for. It is definitely full coverage and I found that it applies the best with a beauty blender. It gives a matte finish and lasts on my skin all day long even when I’m having extra oily days. The color rage is also fairly good.

Lock-It Tattoo foundation is $34 and can be purchased at Sephora or sephora.com

Thanks so much for stopping by and please leave a comment telling me what your favorite foundation is! Have a good one!

Milani Rose Powder Blush Review

Milani

Milani recently released a limited edition Rose Powder Blush collection. I picked up the shades Lady Rogue (left) and Love Potion (right). Right off the bat, let’s just admire how beautiful these are! I’ll admit it, the rose pattern totally sucked me in! But regardless of how beautiful they are, they are actually really good blushes. They are both a matte finish and have great color payoff. A little bit of these goes a loooong way! They are a bit chalky, but nothing that would turn me off from buying them. Milani’s website also says that real rose petals are micro-milled into the powder to bring out the rosy tones. How cool is that?

Milani 3

Love Potion

Love Potion is probably my favorite of the two. It’s a muted dusty pink color and it’s absolutely gorgeous on the skin. The color payoff on this blush is also a little better than Lady Rogue and applies more evenly on my cheeks. It’s also a color that you could wear year round, and with most looks.

Milani 2

Lady Rogue

Lady Rogue is a very red-based coral color. It’s unlike any blush that I own and I’m quickly falling in love with it. It is very pigmented, but can easily turn into a big mess on your cheeks so it’s important to use a light hand. I think this color is perfect for summer and would look especially good on darker skin tones.

Milani 5

These were swatched on bare skin using no primer with my fingers in natural light. This is just one swipe so you can see how pigmented they are!

The Rose Powder blushes are available in select drug stores and I’ve seen them run from $6-8 dollars depending on the location. They are $7.99 on Milani’s website and you can find them here http://milanicosmetics.com/p-166-rose-powder-blush.aspx#!prettyPhoto%5Bgallery1%5D/3/ (unfortunately, the colors are limited, and both I mentioned are not listed )

Thanks for stopping by and I hope you all enjoy your week!

May 2014 Favorites

image (18)

Hey guys! It’s time to say goodbye to May and welcome in another month. I know it’s cliche, but can you believe that the year is half way over? Time has flown! Here’s some of the products I’ve been loving all month long.

image (26)

Dose of Colors lipsticks in Love Potion and Play Date.

I know I’ve been ranting and raving about these guys, but I can’t get enough of them! They are creamy, pigmented, and the most comfortable lipsticks I’ve ever worn. I wrote a review and posted swatches of these so check that out in the ‘Reviews’ section if you want to see more of my thoughts on them.

image (29)

MAC Mineralized Skinfinish in Cheeky Bronze

This is a new product for me and I’m loving it so far. As the name suggests, it’s a gorgeous shimmery bronze that adds a beautiful glow to the skin. My favorite way to wear it over top of my blush to give an “inner glow.” I’m excited to play around with this more as my skin gets a bit darker this summer. I can only image how gorgeous it will look with a tan!

image (31)

Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Dark Circle Eraser concealer

I’ve had this product for a few months now, but lately I’ve found that it’s the first concealer I reach for! It has a light consistency but offers great coverage. It blends easily and I haven’t had any issues with it creasing throughout the day. The little round sponge on the top makes me cringe knowing the bacteria that can build up in it, so I need to find a solution to make it more sanitary. Otherwise, its an excellent under eye concealer and I’ll definitely repurchase when it’s gone since I’m getting low!

image (30)

Maybelline The Elixir in Blush Essence

This gloss is pretty close to perfection. It’s creamy and not sticky and it has excellent color payoff. Not to mention you can snatch up this little guy at the drugstore for only a couple of dollars. You really can’t go wrong! I keep it in my purse and toss on over lipstick or by itself depending on my look for the day. I like it so much that I think I’ll pick up a few more colors next time I visit Target.

image (28)

Laura Mercier Matte Radiance Baked Powder Compact in 01 Highlight

This is a little sample size that I got when I cashed in some VIB points at Sephora. Since the day I got it I haven’t touched any of my other highlighters! It gives the most gorgeous highlight without making you light up like a disco ball. It also doesn’t have any big glittery pieces in it, which I love. I’ll definitely be picking up the full size once this guy runs out.

image (22)

Maybelline lipstick in 915 Blushing Beige

This lipstick is from Maybelline’s The Buffs collection which was released a few months ago. I love my nudes, so I had to try some of these. This color in particular has been my favorite. It’s very creamy and pigmented and definitely a true nude. I’ve been wearing it with my smokey eyes and I’m in love!

image (27)

Tarte Amazonian Clay 12 Hour blush in Blissful

I’ve had this blush for quite a while and I rediscovered it this month. Let me start by saying how much I adore the Amazonian Clay blushes! They have a very buildable coverage which I love in my blushes. I like to be able to control the intensity with whatever look I’m wearing. They also last all day on my skin. This particular color is a matte pinky-coral that is perfect for the spring and summer.

image (32)

MAC eyeshadows in Quarry (left) and Soft Brown (right)

These are shadows that I have heard about for years but for some reason never purchased. I can’t even tell you how disappointed I am that I put off buying these for so long! They have easily become staples in my collection. They are both gorgeous in the crease to blend out whatever eyeshadow I’m rocking for the day. I have been using Soft Brown for warmer looks and Quarry for cool shades.

(Pictured in top picture) Ecotools Domed Bronzer Brush

I totally forgot to take a close up of this brush, so sorry! But I’ve had this brush for years and have been neglecting it for about the past year. One day my makeup brushes were all dirty so I reached for this guy to put on my powder and I fell in love with it all over again. It’s extremely dense and put on my powder so beautifully that I haven’t used any other brush since.

Thanks so much for stopping by and seeing what products I’ve been loving throughout May. Here’s to a happy and healthy June!
